TEACH THEM TO OBEY - LESSON EIGHT

I HAVE THE HOLY SPIRIT

In the previous lesson, we learned that we receive the Holy Spirit when we are saved. God puts the Holy Spirit in us to identify us as His children and also so that the Spirit can help us to live a victorious Christian life. So every believer has the Holy Spirit living in his heart. We are sealed or marked with the Holy Spirit at the time of conversion or salvation (2Cor 1:21-22). Unbelievers do not have the Holy Spirit in them, and that makes us spiritually different from them.

1.      Who is the Holy Spirit?
  1. The Holy Spirit is God: He possesses and exhibits the attributes of Deity
                          i.            He is part of the Three-in-One God (the Trinity)
ii.            The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God the Father – 1Cor 6:11
iii.            The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Jesus Christ
iv.            He played a role in Creation.
                        v.            He is Omnipresent, Omniscient and Omnipotent
vi.            He is given to the believer as a Helper, representing Jesus Christ – John 14:16

  1. The Holy Spirit is a Person: He possesses and exhibits the attributes of a Person
                          i.            He has intelligence
                        ii.            He shows feelings
                      iii.            He has a will
                      iv.            He guides
                        v.            He intercedes
vi.            He can be lied to
                    vii.            He can be insulted
viii.            He can be grieved or made sad
ix.            He relates as a person to other persons

2.      What is the purpose and work of the Holy Spirit? – John 16:12-14
a.       Every believer has the Holy Spirit dwelling in them
b.      Every believer is marked or sealed with the Holy Spirit
c.       The Holy Spirit is the believer’s ever-present, ever-powerful and all-knowing Helper
d.      The goal of the Holy Spirit’s work is building the church of Jesus Christ. He does it through:
                       i.      Teaching - He teaches us to understand God’s word and His ways
ii.      Comforting - He comforts us in times of sorrow and loneliness
iii.      Guiding - He guides us into all truth
iv.      Strengthening - He strengthens us when we are weak
                     v.      Friendship - He is a trusted friend
vi.      Ally - He fights with us and for us
vii.      Intercession - He intercedes for us – He helps us to pray
  1. Believers are to be Baptized in the Holy Spirit, with the evidence of speaking in tongues
  2. The Holy Spirit can show Himself up in the believer through the Gifts of the Spirit

CONFESSION: My body is a temple of the Holy Spirit; He is always with me as a Friend and Helper!
PRAYER: Holy Spirit, help me to relate better with You, and to rely completely on You for all my needs.

TEACH THEM TO OBEY - LESSON SEVEN

I HAVE THE NAME OF JESUS

Through our identification with Christ, we did not only participate in His death, burial, resurrection and seating at God’s right hand, but we also received the legal right to the use of His name. God has highly exalted the Name of Christ Jesus, and therefore the use of the Name is a huge blessing for the believer. The Name of Jesus is so powerful that anytime it is mentioned it is as if Jesus Himself is physically present. Jesus did not need to be given a great name because he was already above all. But God invested in the Name of Jesus for the Church.

Why do we need a Name?
a.       We are redeemed from dominion of Satan, yet we live in a world ruled by Satan
b.      Satan is the god of this world and has opportunity to attack believers through diseases, difficulties, trials and temptations, etc – 2Cor 4:4, Eph 2:2
c.       We need to resist the devil all the time – James 4:7
d.      The Name of Jesus is one of the weapons God gave us to wage war against the devil in our lives and also in the lives of the people around us – Mk 16:17-18

Three Reasons why the Name of Jesus is great
a.       He inherited it – Heb 1:2-4
b.      He achieved it through conquest – Col 2:15
c.       It was conferred on him – Phil. 2:9-10

All believers have the right to use the Name of Jesus Christ – John 16:23-24
a.       We have the right to use the name in making requests to God in prayer
b.      We have the right to use the name of Jesus in winning souls – Matt 28:19-20
c.       We have the right to use the name against evil spirits – Mk 16:17
d.      We have the right to use the name in healing the sick and performing miracles – Mk. 16:18
e.       We have the right to use the name of Jesus to overcome every adversity – Mk 16:18
f.       We are more than conquerors through His name – Rom 8:35-39

CONFESSION: The name of Jesus Christ is above all names. Let every power be subdued now, in Jesus name

PRAYER: I pray and bind all authorities and powers and command them submit to me now, in Jesus name.

TEACH THEM TO OBEY - LESSON SIX

I HAVE IDENTIFIED WITH CHRIST

Identification with Christ refers to the fact that believers participated in the crucifixion, death, burial, resurrection, ascension and seating at the Father’s right hand. God is not limited by time so in eternity past, He regarded every human who would come into union with Christ as being in Him participating in His death, resurrection and so on. (analogy: Levi was in Abraham – Heb 7:4-10). When we identified with Christ, He became our Substitute in order to secure our redemption from the kingdom of Satan.

Six Steps in Man’s Identification with Christ
1.      I was crucified with ChristGal 2:20, Rom 6:6
a.       Christ did not need to be crucified, but he was crucified on the cross on our behalf
b.      We identified with Him on the cross; He was our Substitute

2.      I died with ChristRom 6:5-8
a.       Christ did not need to die physically, but he died because we had to die with Him
b.      We identified with Christ in His death and he became our Substitute

3.      I was buried with Christ – Rom 6:4, Col 2:12
  1. The spirit of Christ went to hell with us and He paid the penalty on our behalf
  2. We suffered the punishment of hell through identification with Christ, so we are free to go to heaven.

4.      I was made alive with Christ – Col 2:13-15, Eph 2:5
a.       Christ did not need to be made alive because He is life; but he did because we identified with him
b.      We conformed to him when he was made alive. Whatever Christ is, we have become.
c.       We have therefore received the Life of God, just like Christ.

5.      I was raised with Christ – Eph 2:6
a.       Christ overcame the powers of darkness and rose up with us. We identify with Christ in His victory over Satan.
b.      When Christ stripped Satan of his authority, it was as though we had done it.
c.        All authority was given to Christ and it is also ours – Matt 28:18-20

6.      I was seated with Christ – Eph 1:20-23, Eph 2:6
  1. We are seated with Christ in the heavenly realms
  2. God has legally put all things under His feet (His Body, the Church) in His Resurrection.
  3. Through his death and resurrection, Christ was exalted and given a Name above all names – Phil 2:8-11
  4. Because we are seated with Christ, we reign as kings on earth from above, and all our enemies (sin, sickness, poverty, etc) are under our feet. – Rom 5:17

CONFESSION: I am in Christ; He died for me, and I am whoever He is; what he can do I can do.

PRAYER: I pray for the grace to live like Christ and to do what He is doing

TEACH THEM TO OBEY

LESSON FIVE; I’M JUSTIFIED THROUGH FAITH

Adam’s sin made man unrighteous and guilty of eternal punishment in hell (Rom 1:18). God made man for fellowship but man was denied access to Him because of unrighteousness. No man could be made righteous by observing the law or doing good works. God’s righteousness can only be received freely by grace through faith in Christ. When Jesus went to the cross and died, he bore the punishment that we should have carried. Jesus died in our place, so that we might be declared righteous or justified through faith.

What it means to be justified
a.       To be declared righteous in God’s sight
b.      To be brought in a right relationship with God
c.       To be treated as if one has never sinned
d.      We are justified when we believe and confess Jesus as Lord and Saviour.

We received God’s righteousness2Cor 5:21
a.       We received God’s righteousness when we were justified
b.      With God’s righteousness, we can live like Christ.
c.       God sees us through his own righteousness and not our
own righteousness

We received grace when we were justified
a.       We walk in righteousness by grace – Rom 5:2
b.      Through grace, we are faultless before God – Jude 1:24 (KJV)
c.       Through grace, we are kept from falling – Jude 1:24 (KJV)
d.      We cannot stand in the faith without grace – Jude 1:24 (KJV)

We have peace with God – Rom 5:1
a.       We are reconciled to God when we are justified
b.      We have divine favour when we are justified
c.       We are saved from God’s wrath; and he is pleased with us when we are justified
d.      We have an unbroken fellowship with the Father because we are justified
e.       We can approach God without fear at any time because we are justified – Heb 4:16
f.       God is obliged to protect and provide for us because we are justified

CONFESSION: I have God’s righteousness; God does not count my sins against me because Jesus died to pay for my sins.

PRAYER: Father, help me to live for you, knowing that I am your righteousness. Let me be a good example of your grace and mercy.
