TEACH THEM TO OBEY - LESSON TWELVE

GOD’S WORD AND FAITH

The Christian walk is a life of faith, based on the word of God. We can live a successful Christian life if we have faith in God’s word. Jesus lived on earth and worked by faith, and He taught us to always trust in God and live by faith. Faith has to be the lifestyle of every believer; and faith is nurtured through God’s word – 2Cor 5:7, Rom 10:17.

What is God’s Word?
a.       Anything that God has spoken directly – eg. God spoke to Abraham (Gen 12:1-3); Moses (Exod 3:4-5)
b.      God spoke through the Prophets – eg. Isaiah, Jeremiah
c.       What the Apostles said in the New Testament – eg. Paul
d.      Anything Jesus said is God’s word because He is God – John 1:1,18)
e.       The written record of what the prophets, apostles and Jesus have spoken; i.e. The Scriptures
f.       The spoken proclamation by some preachers or prophets or other believers in the church today

Why you have to study God’s Word
a.       God’s word is complete, pure and has no errors and can be relied upon – Prov. 30:5-6
b.      We will know God and His will when we study God’s word
c.       God’s word can help us in our time of need and give direction in life – 1Tim 3:16-17, Ps 119:105
d.      Our faith will increase when we study God’s word – Rom 10:17
e.       We can do God’s work better when we study the Word – 2Tim 2:15
f.       We can stay away from sin and lead a holy life if we study God’s word – Ps 119:9-11

What is faith?
a.       Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. - Heb 11:6
b.      We have faith when we believe that something we have not yet seen or experienced exits
c.       We are not walking by faith if we want to see or experience something before we believe it exits

How to live by faith
a.       Study God’s word everyday to grow in faith – 2Tim 2:15
b.      Meditate on the Word or imagine only what God’s word says – Josh 1:8
c.       Confess what God’s word says and not what you see or how you feel – Prov 18:21
d.      Don’t speak negative words or the things you don’t want to happen – Prov 18:21
e.       Show your faith by practicing or doing what God’s word says – James 2:17-18
f.       Don’t complain but always be joyful and thank God for the things you go through in life – 1Thes 5:16-18
CONFESSION: I walk by faith and not by sight; I love God’s word, and I live by it every day.

PRAYER: Lord, teach me your word, and let it be the joy and rejoicing of my soul. May your word change my life day by day, in Jesus name.

TEACH THEM TO OBEY - LESSON ELEVEN

WATER BAPTISM

Water baptism has been with the church since it began. Over the years, however, some church denominations have modified it; and instead of immersing converts in water, they rather sprinkle or pour water on their heads to baptize them. But that is not right. Jesus Christ was baptized in water by immersion and we have to follow his example by also baptizing in water by immersion. He commanded us to baptize people who believe the Gospel (Matt. 28:19)

1.      What is Baptism?
  1. The word, “Baptism” is from a Greek word, “Baptizo”, meaning “to immerse completely in something”. It is immersing an object in a medium so it is covered completely.
  2. Water Baptism is a Christian act, sacrament or ceremony by which new converts to the faith are immersed in water and removed, to signify their union with Christ Jesus.
  3. Water Baptism must be by immersion, because Jesus was baptized by immersion – Matt. 3:13-16
  4. Sprinkling or pouring water on people is therefore not Water Baptism.
  5. Water Baptism is therefore not for unbelievers or children who have not understood the Gospel to be saved.

2.      What is the significance of Water Baptism? – Rom. 6:4, Col 2:11-12, Gal 3:27
  1. Water Baptism is an outward demonstration of some spiritual experiences we went through when we were saved
  2. Water Baptism demonstrates our spiritual baptism into the Body of Christ when we are saved – Gal 3:27
  3. Water Baptism shows that we died and resurrected with Christ Jesus. – Rom 6:4, Col 2:12
  4. Water Baptism is another way of publicly declaring your faith in Christ; and that helps the believer to be mindful of his public conduct, and live like Christ. – Rom 6:4
3.      What does water baptism do to our salvation? – Lk 23:40-43
  1. Water baptism only demonstrates what has already happened; it has no spiritual benefit to our salvation.
  2. We are not better believers when we are baptized in water; and our salvation is not incomplete, neither is it reduced if we are not baptized.
  3. Water Baptism cannot replace belief in the Gospel and the confession of faith in Christ. It therefore does not save anyone.
4.      Examples of Water Baptism
  1. Jesus Christ - Matt. 3:13-16
  2. The Ethiopian Eunuch – Acts 8:36-39
  3. Saul (Paul) – Acts 9:17-19
  4. Cornelius’ household – Acts 10:47-48
  5. The jailers household – Acts 16:31-33
5.      Jesus commanded us to baptize those who believe the Gospel
Every believer is commanded, not only to preach the Gospel, but to baptize those who believe the message- Matt 28:19

CONFESSION: I died with Christ; I was buried with Christ and I have resurrected with Christ into a new way of life
PRAYER: I pray that as long as I live, I will honour Christ in all I do because of his death and resurrection, in Jesus name

TEACH THEM TO OBEY - LESSON TEN

JESUS CHRIST IS MY EXAMPLE

Jesus Christ did not only die for our sins, he also gave us an example to follow. All we know about His death, resurrection, ministry and life on earth are good examples for all believers. Jesus Christ is therefore our Perfect Example, and all believers are commanded to follow His example (1Cor 11:1)

Jesus Christ is our Example in many ways, including:
  1. Water Baptism - Jesus was baptized by immersion in water and we have to also be baptized in water by immersion. (Matt.3:13-16)
  2. Word Study and Obedience - Jesus obeyed the words of God, the Father; we have to also study God’s word and do what it says. (John 15:10)
  3. Prayer - Jesus prayed all the time; and he commands us to pray (Mk 1:35, Lk 18:1)
  4. Giving - Jesus gave up His life as a sacrifice; we are also to give money and material things to support God’s work; we should also give to the needy (John 3:16, Lk 6:38)
  5. Fellowship - Jesus, the Holy Spirit and the Father are One and they always work together; we are also to fellowship with other believers in love and work together in unity (John 17:20-21, Heb 10:25)
  6. Preaching the Gospel - Jesus was always preaching the Gospel, casting our devils and healing the sick; He commands us to also preach the Gospel, cast out devils and heal the sick (Acts 10:38, Mk 16:15-18)
  7. Power over Sin - Jesus did not commit any sin, and he overcame the power of sin when he died and resurrected. We also have power over sin, so we should not allow sin to control us (Heb 4:15, Rom 6:14)

CONFESSION: I am a child of God; I am not my own because I follow the example of Christ in all things!

PRAYER: Father, I thank you for the grace to be like Jesus and be a good example in all things at all times, in Jesus name.

TEACH THEM TO OBEY - LESSON NINE

I BELONG TO GOD’S FAMILY

In Lesson Three, we learned that when we believe and confess Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, we become God’s children; we are joined immediately to the Family of God or God’s Household in a spiritual kingdom known as the Kingdom of God.
(Read Eph 2:19-22)

What is God’s Family like?
  1. All believers are members of God’s household
  2. All believers are citizens of the same Kingdom – the Kingdom of God
  3. We should not treat any believer as a stranger in God’s Kingdom
  4. God is the Father of all members of His Household
  5. God dwells among His children in His Kingdom
  6. All believers are joined together in the Family of God
  7. All believers should support one another in the Kingdom
  8. God’s Family is stronger when all believers stay together in unity

CONFESSION: I belong to the Kingdom of God and God is my Father.

PRAYER: Lord, open my eyes to understand the mystery of the Kingdom of God so I can live by the principles that govern it, in Jesus name
