TEACH THEM TO OBEY - LESSON THIRTEEN

PRAYER

Jesus prayed always; he taught his disciples to pray and he wants us to follow in His steps. Prayer is one of the secrets to a victorious Christian walk, and success in ministry. We cannot follow Christ and obey his Word if we fail to pray. The Bible commands us to pray without ceasing (1Thes 5:17)

What is Prayer?
a.       Any means by which believers communicate with God
b.      Believers pray to God through Jesus Christ
c.       Prayer can be loud or silent
d.      Posture is not important – you can sit, kneel, stand, etc.
e.       We can pray anywhere we are and at any time we want

Descriptions of Prayer in the Scriptures
a.       Calling on the name of the Lord – Gen 4:26
b.      Calling on God – Ps 17:6
c.       Crying out to the Lord – Ps 3:4
d.      Lifting up one’s soul to the Lord – Ps 25:1
e.       Seeking the Lord – Isaiah 55:6
f.       Approaching the throne of grace with confidence – Heb 4:16
g.      Drawing near to God – Heb 10:22

Why you have to pray always
a.       We are commanded to pray – 1Thes 5:17
b.      Prayer is the necessary link to receiving God’s promises
c.       Prayer gives spiritual strength
d.      Prayer gives you power for God’s work
e.       Prayer makes you know God’s mind about situations
f.       Prayer will keep you away from the devil’s tricks

How to Pray – Matt 6:9-13, Mk 11:24
a.       We should begin with praises and thanksgiving to God
b.      We should know clearly what we want to ask for:
                    i.            Prayer can be a personal request
ii.            Prayer can be a request on another person’s behalf
iii.            We can pray to destroy the devil’s works
c.       We should be specific in our requests
d.      We should ask everything in the name of Jesus Christ
e.       We should believe (have faith) that God has granted our request
f.       We should thank God for the answer

CONFESSION: I love the Lord; I am not anxious about anything; I pray without ceasing and He hears me always

PRAYER: Lord, let your desires be fulfilled in me as I seek your face continually. May I not lean on my own understanding, but acknowledge you in all my ways.
